The artist Maria Gonça delves into her inner self in order to express herself.
The subjects that she works on are mainly the use of herself, her feelings and thoughts as the engine of inspiration and the materials are tools to express it in order to achieve the most spontaneous result.
I use myself as a guinea pig for my own art. — says the artist that craves to create works with colors, textures and sensory capturing compositions, often communicating thoughts, feelings or wanting to capture these from the viewer.
Maria uses abstract as a mean to develop her techniques that flee from control trying to reveal the unconscious as purely as possible.
She is a self-taught artist, who decided to assume the form of learning that best suited her after having adapting difficulties
in a tiring academic journey. She immerses herself in readings and audiovisual content that are the ones that best adapt
to her peculiar and often intense mental rhythm. She loves to learn by observation, trial and error and putting her hands to work, which has led her to try different techniques so far such as drawings with pastels, pencils and markers, papier-mâché and clay sculptures, poems and visual edits. Standing out acrylic painting as the one she has felt the most comfortable with so far.
As for inspiration, Maria relates that in one of her art classes at the age of 12 she was struck by the works of Basquiat for the first time, what started as a great admiration later on became a reference for her.
The colors and composition of Miró and Rothko, the dreamy forms of Gaudí and nature also joined right away to inspire the artist.
Gonça was born in Salvador, Brazil in the year 2000 and lives in Barcelona where she works in her own home studio.
